आज डॉ. लक्ष्मण सरकटे सरांची सहकुटुंब भेट घेतली. मनात भावनांचं काहूर माजलं. आजची भेट म्हणजे केवळ एका ज्येष्ठ शास्त्रज्ञाची भेट नव्हती — ती होती माझ्या पत्रकारितेच्या प्रवासातील एका महत्त्वाच्या धड्याची उजळणी. एका अशा माणसाशी पुन्हा जोडल्याचा अनुभव, ज्याने मला शिकवलं की सत्याशी तडजोड केली जात नाही — आणि न्यायासाठी लढणं हेच जगणं असतं.
॥ माफसू भरती घोटाळा — एका संघर्षाची कहाणी
महाराष्ट्र पशु व मत्स्य विज्ञान विद्यापीठात (माफसू) एक महाभयंकर भरती घोटाळा झाला होता. पैसे घेऊन अपात्र उमेदवारांना प्राध्यापक व विद्यापीठतर कर्मचारी पदांवर नेमणुका झाल्या होत्या. काँग्रेसचे अनिस अहमद तेव्हा पदुम मंत्री होते. अन्याय झालेल्या विद्यार्थ्यांकडून मला राष्ट्रवादीच्या माजी आमदार फौजिया खान यांचा संपर्क मिळाला. आमदार बाईंनी हा विषय विधान परिषदेत उपस्थित करण्याचा प्रयत्न केला होता. त्यांच्याकडूनच मला डॉ. लक्ष्मण सरकटे यांचा नंबर मिळाला.
‘व्हिसल ब्लोअर’ म्हणजे काय हे त्यावेळी मला प्रत्यक्ष अनुभवायला मिळालं. माफसू घोटाळ्याची इत्यंभूत कुंडली मला एकाच ठिकाणी — वन स्टॉप — मिळाली. बातम्या करत होतो, लिहित होतो. परंतु त्याचवेळी आयुष्यासाठी झगडण्यातही एक शिक्षण दुसऱ्या बाजूने मिळत होतं.
॥ चोहोबाजूंनी सुरू असलेली लढाई ॥
डॉ. सरकटे सरांची लढाई एकाच आघाडीवर नव्हती. एका बाजूला प्रसार माध्यमे, दुसऱ्या बाजूला उच्च न्यायालय, तिसऱ्या बाजूला विद्यापीठ प्रशासन आणि चौथ्या बाजूला कौटुंबिक पातळीवर — अशी चोहोबाजूंनी ती सुरू होती. लढाई अत्यंत पारदर्शक होती. उद्देश अत्यंत प्रामाणिक होता. अन्यायाविरोधातली चीड होती. शेवटच्या श्वासापर्यंत लढेल पण न्याय मिळेलच — अशी धमक होती.
माहितीच्या अधिकाराचा खराखुरा, परिणामकारक वापर कसा करायचा हे देखील मी सरांकडून शिकलो. समिती पाठोपाठ समित्या गठीत होत होत्या. सोबत अँटी करप्शन ब्युरोची कारवाई सुरू झाली होती. परिस्थिती हाताबाहेर जाते असे दिसल्यावर माजी कुलगुरू डॉ. निनावे आणि त्यांच्या सहकाऱ्यांनी डॉ. सरकटेंवर निलंबनाची कारवाई केली. इतक्या दिवस सुरू असलेली सनदशीर लढाई आता कोसळते काय — अशी परिस्थिती निर्माण झाली होती.
॥ ‘भगवान के घर देर है, अंधेर नहीं…’ ॥
आणि मग घडलं ते अविश्वसनीय. राजभवनातून सूत्रे हलली. महाराष्ट्राच्या इतिहासात कधी असं घडलं नाही असं घडलं — चौकशी अहवालावर आधारित राज्यपालांनी थेट कुलगुरूंना निष्कासित केलं (२०१०). तेव्हाचे पदुम मंत्री डॉ. नितीन राऊत यांनी मला फोनवर ही माहिती दिली तेव्हा क्षणभर माझा विश्वासच बसला नाही.
‘महाराष्ट्राच्या इतिहासात कुलगुरूचे पहिल्यांदाच निलंबन’ — ही बातमी आम्हा सर्वांच्या तीन वर्षांच्या अथक परिश्रमाचे फळ होते. त्यादिवशी डॉ. सरकटे सरांना पशुवैद्यकीय महाविद्यालयात भेटलो तेव्हा त्यांच्या चेहऱ्यावरील भावना आजही माझ्या डोळ्यांसमोर तरळतात.

॥ बातमीदारीच्या शाळेत आयुष्याचं शिक्षण ॥
मी कधी व्हेटर्नरीचा विद्यार्थी नव्हतो, किंवा सरांनी मला कधी वर्गात शिकवलं नाही. परंतु बातमीदारीच्या निमित्ताने जेवढा संपर्क आला, जेवढ्या भेटीगाठी झाल्या — त्यातून आयुष्यभराच्या शिक्षणाची शिदोरी मिळाली.
सत्यावर अफाट निष्ठा. डाऊन टू अर्थ राहणं. विद्यार्थ्यांमध्ये आदरयुक्त भीती आणि मनातून निस्सीम प्रेम. आपल्या भूमिकेवर शेवटपर्यंत ठाम राहणे. प्रचंड सहनशीलता. शेती आणि शेतकऱ्यांप्रती प्रचंड जिव्हाळा — हे सारे गुण सरकटे सरांकडे पाहून शिकता आले.
माफसूच्या निमित्ताने अनेक माणसं आयुष्याशी जोडली गेली. संस्थापक कुलगुरू डॉ. ए.टी. शेरीकर यांच्यासारखी आभाळाएवढी माणसं संपर्कात आली. अलीकडे अशा निडर लोकांचा दुष्काळ जाणवतो — त्यामुळेच सरकटे सरांचं कार्य अधिकच महान ठरतं.

Today I visited Dr. Laxman Sarkate Sir along with his family. A storm of emotions stirred within me. Today’s meeting was not merely a visit to a senior scientist — it was a revisiting of one of the most important lessons of my journalistic journey. The experience of reconnecting with a man who taught me that truth is never compromised — and that fighting for justice is itself a way of living.
॥ The MAFSU Recruitment Scam — A Story of Struggle ॥
A massive recruitment scam had taken place at Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU). Unqualified candidates had been appointed as professors and non-teaching staff in exchange for money. Congress leader Anis Ahmed was the Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries (ADDF) Minister at the time. Through the aggrieved students, I got the contact of former NCP MLA Fauzia Khan. MLA Fauzia Khan had tried to raise the issue in the Legislative Council. It was through her that I received Dr. Laxman Sarkate’s phone number.
That was when I experienced firsthand what a ‘whistle-blower’ truly means. The complete inside story of the MAFSU scam came to me in one place — one stop. I was writing reports, filing stories. But simultaneously, another kind of education was quietly unfolding — learning how to fight for life itself.
॥ A Battle on All Four Fronts ॥
Dr. Sarkate Sir’s fight was not on a single front. On one side — the media, on the second — the High Court, on the third — the university administration, and on the fourth — the family level. The battle was completely transparent. The purpose was absolutely sincere. There was rage against injustice. There was a resolve — I will fight till my last breath, but justice will prevail.
I also learned from Sir how to use the Right to Information Act effectively and with real impact. Committees were being formed one after another. The Anti-Corruption Bureau had also initiated action. Seeing that the situation was slipping out of control, former Vice Chancellor Dr. Ninave and his associates suspended Dr. Sarkate. A situation had arisen where it seemed the long-running lawful struggle might collapse entirely.
॥ ‘God may be slow, but never unjust…’ ॥
And then the unbelievable happened. The strings moved from Raj Bhavan. Something happened that had never happened in the history of Maharashtra — based on the inquiry report, the Governor directly dismissed the Vice Chancellor (2010). When the then ADDF Minister Dr. Nitin Raut informed me of this over the phone, I could not believe it for a moment.
‘For the first time in Maharashtra’s history, a Vice Chancellor was dismissed’ — this news was the fruit of three years of relentless effort by all of us. The day I met Dr. Sarkate Sir at the Veterinary College, the expression on his face still floats before my eyes.

॥ Life’s Education in the School of Journalism ॥
I was never a veterinary student, nor did Sir ever teach me in a classroom. But through the contacts made, through the meetings and interactions that journalism brought — I received a lifetime’s worth of education.
Unwavering faith in truth. Staying down to earth. Inspiring respectful awe in students while holding boundless love for them within. Standing firm on one’s position till the very end. Extraordinary patience. Deep affection for farming and farmers — all these qualities I learned by witnessing Dr. Sarkate Sir.
Through MAFSU, many people became connected to life’s larger journey. People as great as the sky itself — like founding Vice Chancellor Dr. A.T. Sherikar — came into contact. In recent times, there is a growing drought of such fearless individuals. That is precisely why the work of people like Sarkate Sir becomes all the more invaluable.
The true hero of the MAFSU struggle — Dr. Laxman Sarkate Sir!
May Sir be blessed with long life and good health. May the battle for justice continue until final victory.
